The Justice Gap Fund gives a voice to those who would otherwise have none

I once had the opportunity to be intensely involved in a pro bono class action case, in partnership with the Public Counsel, on behalf of several thousand children living with autism in East Los Angeles (Benito R., et al. v. Eastern Los Angeles Regional Center, et al.). I got to know some of the families and children involved as I spent time in their homes interviewing them, getting declarations, and, eventually, walking them through the terms of the class action settlement. In doing so, I saw up-close just how much these families struggle every day, yet they were committed to fight for their children’s rights and determined to give their children the best chance they could to grow into healthy and happy adults.

Working on this case was, by far, the most fulfilling thing I have done in my career as an attorney. As I got to know these families, I often heard about other troubles as well – trouble with their mortgage, trouble with their school district, trouble with a landlord – and I always tried to refer them to the appropriate legal aid program for help. Contributing to the Justice Gap Fund gives me hope that when I refer families like these in the future, they will have somewhere to turn to for justice. Donate now to give a voice to those who would otherwise have none.
